Free Initial Consultation
There are several purposes served by the free initial consultation. Above all, you should keep in mind that you need to be able to have a good working relationship with your attorney. Let’s face it — sometimes people don’t get along. The free initial consultation gives you the chance to decide whether you would feel comfortable with an attorney before you sign on the dotted line.
Secondly, there are things about the Colorado Workers’ Compensation system which you absolutely need to know before you even think about trying to represent yourself. Do you understand what information is contained in a Final Admission of Liability? Do you know what your responsibilities are when you receive a Final Admission? Do you understand why it is not advisable to simply walk into your employer’s office and quit your job without first discussing matters with your attorney? Your free initial consultation can address these issues and more.
The consultation also helps you prepare for things which might occur in your case, things which you have not anticipated because you’re new to the Colorado Workers’ Compensation system. You can discuss the kind of fee arrangement which is most compatible with your needs, whether it is a contingent fee agreement or simply an hourly attorney’s fee for time devoted to your case. You can find out something about the likelihood of your prevailing in your case and the length of time you should expect for your case to be litigated.
I suggest you spend a few moments before your first meeting with your attorney to collect your thoughts and prepare a list of questions. If you do not feel comfortable with him/her, then trust your instincts and move on to somebody else.
And one more thing. Don’t forget to bring all your paperwork. Let the attorney decide what is important and what’s not. Just bring it so the attorney at least has the chance to review it.
